I do hope that the council members deciding this issue will follow the vote of the MI coucil and say no to plan of selling any camp. I hope our council says "no" to any trades. If it is too good to be true, it is!

I too, wish Camp Easton to remain where it has for the past 82 years. How else can I help keep Camp Easton from being moved?

Sorry to see that the Charles Howell Reservation is no longer. I spent my first away-from-home there in 1952 and enjoyed another stay in 1953 (or was that '53 and '54?) . It was a great camp and a lot of fun. Detroit was a great city back then, but we left in 1954 for the safety of Lincoln Nebraska.

Oh my gosh! After nearly 59 years of BSA involve
ment/registration and visiting and/or working in over 50 Scout camps, I was unaware of this mass
divestiture of Scout camp properties including several in which I have been involved. I see it as a disaster, and doubt that the trend can be reversed. Sad, truly sad!! Whither Scouting??

Just to throw some additional information into the mix.

The Tinnerman base did not operate this past summer due to the failed septic system that was referenced in the article that was linked. The crews that were scheduled to go to Tinnerman were instead given the option to go through the Northern Tier High Adventure Program, and my base in Atikokan, ON served between 15 and 17 of these crews this July (I would have to go back and check my files for an exact number) and the feedback that I received from those crews was very positive. I am sure that the availability of a viable substitute program (and N-Tier is an excellent program) influenced the GCC.

I would also like to point out that in addition to the 200K that would have been necessary to fix the septic system, having the camp shut down for a summer cannot have helped their across the board maintenance in other areas. Also, the sort of hiatus that Tinnerman experienced this summer may have been devastating to the continuity of its staff and the institutional knowledge base necessary to provide good program. I work at N-Tier in a summer where the base that I was at had experienced a very high turnover in staff. It created many difficulties that took us several years to overcome, and we were able to pull from the experienced staff at our other bases. That advantage may not apply to Tinnerman.

It is regrettable that Tinnerman is shutting down, but all those scouters who enjoyed its program should take comfort that an excellent substitute is available to all scouts at Northern Tier.

What a shame that camps are being sold and our selection of badges have been abandonded. What a way to celebrate our 100th anniversary. Keep the camps! Keep the old badges! Get rid of the Girls Guide and the Journeys.
